You can rest assured that the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD will get major updates. According to some sources, the vehicle will be receiving a major overhaul for its production. The company will also be updating the powertrain and interior cabin design, in addition to the rear and front ends.
This was originally intended for the model 2023. GMC delayed production due to a variety of complications, mainly because superconductor chips were in short supply and the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they made it a 2024 model. They will begin production in the middle of this year. Production would be at Flint, Michigan’s manufacturing plant.
2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Redesign
GMC has not yet provided details on the upcoming Sierra production. However, some prototypes have been seen in testing. These spy photos show that the truck will get a new front and rear end. The prototypes are very heavily covered so details can be scarce and shady.
The front fascia appears wider and supports updated headlights. Redesigned work was also done to the rear end, including new bumpers and taillights. There would be some differences in trims so expect more features (and better looks) for higher trims.
Interior Cabin
The exterior will be updated, so expect some improvements to the interior. The cabin will be more comfortable and plush. The upcoming model will include improved quality and more trims. The current Sierra’s touchscreen infotainment screen measures 8.0 inches. This display will be larger in the 2024 model. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were the standard features. They should be available for the 2024 model.
People have been anticipating entertainment systems for the back seats and satellite Sirius XM radio. According to sources, the GMC could be designing a Denali trim that is more luxurious and would add many more features and technologies. We will have to wait as they haven’t revealed any details.
Performance and Powertrain
The 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is expected to feature a carryover powertrain, although details are not available. This means that 2500 will come with a gas-powered V8 unit of 6.6 liters capacity. It is the standard powertrain. This configuration is capable of producing 401 horsepower and 464 Nm torque. It is also paired with an auto six-speed transmission and rear-wheel driving system. As an option, an all-wheel driving system may also be available. This configuration could even produce 450 horsepower, according to some rumors.
An optional V8 diesel Duramax unit of 6.6 liters capacity would be available. It will deliver 445 horsepower and 910 Nm torque and is paired with an auto 10-speed transmission. Sierra 2500HD has one rear axle that can hold almost 4,000 pounds of cargo or 18,500 pounds of towing capacity.
Towing and Payload Capacity
The Sierra 2500HD is capable of pulling 36,000 pounds. These massive capacities are possible only with the diesel engine, regular cabin, rear-wheel drive, and dual-rear-wheel axle. A fifth-wheel hitch can reduce the truck’s capacity to 32,000 pounds. Only the Sierra 2500HD comes with a single rear-wheel axle. Its largest version can tow 22,500 pounds.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA does not test heavy vehicles like the Sierra HD or its giant competitors so we are unable to judge their real-world mpg using our highway fuel economy route. The Sierra 2500HD Denali diesel engine was the only one we tested, and it earned 17 mpg on the highway. Comparatively, both the diesel-powered Silverado LTZ crew cab and Ram 22500 Tradesmen regular diesel we tested managed 19 mpg. GMC’s standard gas-fed V-8 will get you worse fuel economy than diesel.
Connectivity and Infotainment
Every Sierra HD comes standard with a touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Base models are limited in options but can still be equipped with a 120-volt outlet or a mobile hotspot. All trims have an 8.0-inch screen and additional charging ports. Each system includes a set of physical buttons and rotary knobs that can be accessed easily.
You can upgrade the larger touchscreen with built-in navigation and Bose audio, SiriusXM satellite broadcast, and rear-seat entertainment. The 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment screen offers the best integration with features such as Google Built-in, split-screen navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. This display is standard on Denali Ultimate and Denali Ultimate trims. GMC offers an app for smartphones that allows remote control of trailer functions. The truck’s infotainment system also allows for the storage of different trailer profiles, which can be used to monitor maintenance.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Although the truck is capable of being equipped with driver-assistance technology in some cases, it only offers a small number of options. Heavy-duty competitors offer more assistance.
The GMC has a wide range of viewing modes. One is transparent, which allows you to see through attached trailers as though they were not there. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety websites for more information on the Sierra HD’s crash test results. The following safety features are key:
- Automated emergency braking and standard forward-collision warning
- Standard lane departure warning
- Blind-spot monitoring is available and rear cross-traffic alert
Every 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD includes a forward-collision alert, automatic emergency brake, lane departure warning, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and adaptive cruise controls are some of the safety features available.
GMC also has new technology that can be used to haul large cargo. Heavy-duty pickups will come with a transparent trailer camera, extended blind spot monitoring that can detect vehicles behind and besides long trailers, and a gross combined weight alert. There are also up to 14 camera views.
2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Release Date and Price
We don’t know much about the Sierra 2500HD. However, it does include information about the release date, as well as the price. It’s safe to assume that the new design will result in a higher price. The current Sierra sells for $42,000 for the Pro trim and $47,000 for the SLE. The AT4 costs $65,000, while the SLT is priced at $57,000. Denali costs $71,000. The new 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD will debut sometime in 2023.
