Despite the 4Runner’s impressive sales numbers, it’s time for some changes. It’s not surprising that the current generation feels old in many ways. The interior is worn out, the transmission lacks gears and the engine is too thirsty. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is about to undergo a major redesign. We expect to see the new model sometime in the second quarter of next year.
There will be many innovations in every aspect of the vehicle. The new generation will have a new platform and a completely new exterior design. The new cabin is a certainty, but we are certain that the new 4Runner will have a more efficient engine. The new model should be more modern in all aspects.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Redesign
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner will get a complete redesign after so many years. Details are not yet available, but we believe the new generation will be riding on the TNGA F platform. This platform is already used in new SUVs such as the Sequoia or Land Cruiser 300. The new generation should offer many improvements starting with a lower center of gravity and a revised suspension setup that will make the vehicle more comfortable on the road.
We are certain that the 4Runner will continue to be a capable off-road vehicle. The new generation will feature a rugged layout with a proper suspension setup, and lots of off-road features such as a locking differential, two-speed transmission, and hill-descent control. You can expect big all-terrain tires and proper approach and departure angles, crawl control, and a four-wheel drive.
Exterior
The current generation’s exterior design is surprisingly good. We expect a more modern Toyota 4Runner in 2024. We expect the rugged and muscular exterior to remain. However, we are expecting a new design that draws inspiration from its full-size siblings. You can expect exclusive styling details.
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner will be the same in terms of dimensions. We don’t anticipate any major changes to the 2024 Toyota 4Runner, despite its modest wheelbase compared to other segments. Overhangs are the same as before. The company doesn’t want any sacrifices to the off-road potential to gain more interior space.
Interior
The amount of space for passengers should be kept relatively constant to the current model. As with the second row, the front seats will be comfortable and spacious. The third row, however, will be a bit tighter and less adult-friendly. The cargo area should still have respectable numbers.
We counted n a completely different cabin design. The dashboard of the current model is outdated. We expect a new dashboard with a more appealing aesthetic and finer materials. We also expect new tech and convenience features in the dash, especially the new infotainment and connectivity systems, and other similar features.
Engine
Under the hood, there will be big changes. The outgoing model used a 4.0-liter V6 that is bulletproof but also has low efficiency. We expect to see a smaller engine in the new model. Sources speculate about the turbo-four’s 2.4-liter displacement, which produces 275 horsepower and 311-pound feet of torque. Some speculate about a hybrid powertrain that is based on the turbo-four and produces around 350 horsepower.
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner will get a new transmission. Even though the 5-speed automatic is a classic, it doesn’t have the best crawl mode. The new model will be equipped with an 8-speed auto transmission. The base models will continue to have rear-wheel drive. Part-time and full-time AWD systems will also be available.
Design & Mechanicals
Since 2009, the current 4Runner has seen its styling updated a few times. It shares many similarities with its Tacoma pickup counterpart. The next-gen Tacoma is expected to be at dealers in the coming year. Spy shots have given enough clues about its design and styling changes. We expect Toyota to do the same with the 2024 4Runner. It will have double-slat horizontal grille bars, and a boxy design to distinguish it from Toyota’s monocoque SUVs.
Toyota’s TNGAF platform should be used by the 4Runner, just like the next-gen Tacoma. This platform is already used in the latest versions of Sequoia, Tundra, and Tundra. The improvements over the current SUV include weight savings, improved ride quality, quieter cabins, and greater safety. For added comfort, we expect that the next 4Runner’s suspension system will be upgraded.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Release Date & Price
The Toyota 4Runner 2024 should be available sometime in the second half of 2023. Base versions will be around 40.000 dollars while four-door versions like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco are key competitors.
