In Fall 2022, the plug-in hybrid version of the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander will arrive in the U.S. It could get its first model-year update in Q3 2023 and become the 2024 model. Here is our preview of the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The information and images presented in this article are for the current model, and any updates to that year’s models will be reflected.
2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Redesign
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is based on the same design but with minor modifications. The original design is of high quality and will likely satisfy the majority of customers. The plug-in retains the new-generation Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield and its bold proportions.
Outlander PHEV features a two-tone exterior, with a contrast roof and a badge that reads ‘PLUG-IN HYBRID EVO’ on the front fenders. The only visual difference is the lid that covers the charging port on the left shoulder. The 20-inch alloy wheel is the same as the one on the gas model. Mitsubishi may introduce new colors and wheel designs but the core design is expected to stay the same. Most of the color options from the previous model are expected to be carried over. The following is a list of the most likely colors of the MY2024 Outlander.
- White Diamond
- Red Diamond
- Black Diamond
- Labrador Black Pearl
- Alloy Silver
- Cosmic Blue
- Mercury Gray
- Deep Bronze
- White Diamond + Black Roof
- Black Diamond + Bronze (roof)
- Mercury Gray + Black Roof
- Red Diamond + black (roof).
- Alloy silver + black (roof).
Interior
The interior of the Outlander PHEV MY2024 is expected to remain unchanged. The instrument cluster provides the driver with the ability to monitor the status and functionality of the plug-in system. The instrument cluster shows the outputs of the petrol and electric engines, as well as the level and type of charging from regenerative brakes.
The previous Outlander PHEV had a major disadvantage in that it couldn’t accommodate seven passengers as well as the gasoline and diesel models. This is not the case with the all-new Outlander PHEV. In the U.S. three-row seating comes standard. Mitsubishi is likely to keep the seating arrangement unchanged for the MY2024 upgrade.
Trims and Features
Mitsubishi could launch the Outlander PHEV 2024 in the U.S. with ES, SE Technology, and SE Technology trims, as well as SEL, SEL Premium, SEL Touring, and SEL Premium. These trims could have new standard equipment or some that are deleted from the previous model. Below are the features that these grades had in the previous model.
ES
The ES trim comes with 18″ alloy wheels, a 12.3″ fully digital instrument panel, an 8″ Smartphone-Link Display Audio system (SDA), touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mitsubishi Connect, as well as a free 24-month trial.
As standard, Mitsubishi’s new plug-in SUV is equipped with a rear parking sensor, Forward Collision Mitigation, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Active Blind Spot Assist, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, and Trailer Stability Assist.
SE
The SE trim adds more style and luxury, with features such as 20” two-tone alloy wheels, leather-wrapped leather steering wheel, leather-wrapped leather shift knob, and artificial leather seats. The SE trim offers greater safety with a multiview camera system, front park sensors, LED fog lights, and MI-PILOT, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go Lane (ACC), Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Prevention with Traffic Sign Recognition, and Traffic Sign Recognition with Traffic Sign Recognition.
The SE trim offers more comfort and convenience thanks to its additional/better features, such as a hands-free power liftgate with remote control, electric-folding side mirrors and heated seats, a 9″ Smartphone-Link Display Audio system (SDA), a touchscreen infotainment unit that includes Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD radio, a wireless smartphone charger and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Powertrain
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2024 would combine a 2.4-liter MIVEC gasoline motor with a 114-hp motor up front and a 134-hp motor in the back. This combination would produce 248 hp and 332 lb. ft. combined torque. The 20 kWh battery pack is the source of power for electric motors. It is mounted below the floor, between the wheels, and gives the SUV a low center of gravity. The ground clearance doesn’t change much.
A button in the center console would allow the driver to choose from four modes: EV (Electric Vehicle), Save, Charge, and Normal. The EV mode will shut down the engine, and the vehicle will only run on electricity. The Save mode stores the energy from the battery pack to be used later, for example when you arrive home late at night. In Charge mode, you would leave the engine running to charge the battery. In the Charge mode, the electric motors are off to save energy. The Normal mode is for hybrid operation.
The 20 kWh battery is expected to give a range of electric travel of at least 40 miles. The 2024 Outlander will be able to cover at least 420-mile total distance with the battery fully charged. Fuel economy combined will be at least 64 MPGe. The Outlander PHEV 2024 would run as often as possible in the electric mode, including when heating or cooling is used. Customers would be able pre-cool the cabin or pre-heat it while charging so that the entire energy stored in the battery pack could be used to drive.
The 2024 Outlander is expected to be the first PHEV in the U.S. from a nonluxury brand to support DC fast charging. It would take a DC fast charger approximately 38 minutes to fully charge the battery pack. A Level II AC charger will take approximately 6.5 hours to charge the battery pack. Mitsubishi has added a new version of its S-AWC 4WD (Super All-Wheel Control System) to the Outlander PHEV. After the MY2024 upgrade, the company should continue to use the new system.
The updated S-AWC features a brake control system that controls the brake force of the rear wheels in addition to the front wheel braking system. The system reduces the load placed on the front wheel and extracts maximum performance out of all four wheels. The driver has seven different drive modes to choose from Normal, Tarmac Gravel Snow Mud Power Eco.
Mitsubishi’s ‘Innovative Pedal’ will allow Outlander PHEV drivers to drive with just one pedal. This would be especially useful for off-road driving and on snow-covered roads. Customers can use MI-PILOT in optimal driving conditions. This is the company’s driver assistance technology that works on highways. MI-PILOT combines Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keep Assist and considers navigational data to adjust vehicle speed. Even on curves, it works.
