From a distance at first glance, the second-gen 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 may not look much different from the first model, but it is an entirely different vehicle. Mercedes unveiled the exterior of the brand new GT coupe at Monterey Friday, unveiling an all-sports GT that is, as you would expect, now available with all-wheel drive as well as 2+2 seating.
2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Changes
While the first 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 was based on a shorter SLS AMG platform, this car is now built on an aluminum base with the latest SL roadster. This means that the new model has its predecessor’s distinctive rear dual-clutch transaxle, in favour of a traditional multi-clutch nine-speed gearbox. Also, it appears that an oil-based dry sump system which allowed the AMG GT’s engine to be placed relatively low within the chassis has gone also, which when combined with the upgraded gearbox allowed the use of all-wheel drive. The prior GT was a rear-drive-only vehicle. The 2024 version is more spacious in every way than the predecessor.
This engine comes with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that AMG has been running for a couple of years. The base GT 55, gets 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. In the GT 63, the car shown here, you’ll get 577 hp and 590 pounds of torque. This is the same as the original AMG GT R. The new numerals bring the GT into line with the SL and eliminate the confusing alphabetic naming design of the older model.
Mercedes states that it is the GT 63 that runs from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds, and then on to a top speed of 196 mph as well and its GT 55 hits 60 in 3.8 seconds and ends at the speed of 183 speed. The all-wheel-drive system is flexible and capable of sending up to 50% of the torque towards the front wheel, or 100% of the torque to the rear axle. Therefore, we hope that the GT hasn’t lost its desire for tail-out extravagantness.
Exterior & Interior
There are plenty of fascinating chassis parts as well. Similar to the SL GT, the GT utilizes all-aluminum multi-link suspension all over and as a standard, it is equipped with an anti-roll control system that is hydraulic like the one employed by McLaren. There aren’t any traditional anti-roll bars, instead, the damper’s compression circuit located on the other end of the vehicle is connected hydraulically to the rebound side of the damper that runs across the axle and the reverse is true. This permits a fully adjustable control of the rigidity of the roll.
This makes the car more comfortable for daily driving and also reduces body roll when driving on speedy roads as well as on tracks. The standard features include the rear-wheel steering system and an electronically controlled rear limit-slip differential. The GT features 20-inch wheels around, with a stance that is nearly square for its tires – 295/35R20 front, and 305/35R20 in the rear. It’s quite a bit larger than what’s in the SL.
The design of the GT differs from the brand-new SL, the interiors of both vehicles are essentially the same. It’s an electronic gauge cluster as well as an enormous, portrait-oriented central touchscreen, which runs Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system. It’s more akin to other contemporary Mercedes cabins, which gives this GT more of a sort of GT-car style. The increased size of the GT permits the addition of two seats in the rear that fold out into a storage shelf similar to 911’s. The GT is also an open-top car, which makes it an extremely functional sports vehicle.
2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Price & Release Date
We don’t have any pricing details as of yet, however, it’s reasonable to assume that to see that the GT 55 will cost around the same price as the SL 55 or less as well. The same is true for the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 vis a vis the $183,000 SL 63. Mercedes states that deliveries will begin sometime in the first quarter of the year. Do not expect to see a GT roadster, either. They call it the SL.
