Chevrolet announces a new round of updates to the mechanical and cosmetic aspects for 2024’s Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD as well as 3500HD pick-up truck. The trucks represent the three-quarter-ton (2500) as well as the one-ton (3500) segment these trucks are aimed towards commercial customers and those who require serious towing capabilities and payload capacity.
Although they are the HD (Heavy-Duty) Series trucks are branded with the Silverado name, they are constructed according to a different specification than the renowned Silverado 1500 series half-ton. Indicating how profitable and competitive the Heavy-duty market is this announcement is one day before 2023’s Ford Super Duty reveal.
2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Pickup Changes
Chevrolet has tweaked its Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 to produce 470 horsepower and 975 ft-lbs of torque as per the SAE J1349 standard. The numbers show the addition of 25HP and 60lbs over the previous model, and most importantly that the majority of the new torque will remain accessible at a lower 1600 RPM, as in the model currently in use.
Chevy promises that its low-end torque, which is likely to be at a lower speed than the threshold of 1600 RPM, could be increased by up to 25%, but it has not yet announced the numbers. It should, however, provide improved performance in low-speed and grade-climbing particularly when towing.
Transmission
The most notable improvement in it is fitting to the Allison 10-speed automated transmission with the 400-HP 6.6-liter gasoline engine that is standard equipment. The Allison was previously available only using the Duramax turbo-diesel and this Alison is a strong model that was introduced for the model year 2020 and replaced the earlier six-speed Allison unit. (It’s important to note that the Ford Super Duty 10-speed also came out in 2020 for the version year.)
The addition boosts the gasoline-powered Silverado HD’s gross Combined Weight Ratio (GCWR) up to 26,000 pounds an increase of 24,000 pounds. While HD trucks aren’t subject to the official EPA rating for fuel economy It will be interesting to know whether owners can report an increase in efficiency due to the added gears since the drive ratio is identical to the original six-speed transmission, which is 3.73:1.
Towing Tune-Up
For the first time, Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks will feature Adaptive Cruise Control and trailer technology. In essence, the new software lets you use the extra drag and longer braking distances for towing, and it adjusts accordingly. Additionally, the Transparent Trailer feature is now enhanced to work with fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers.
This feature Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert increases the area of the blind zone in proportion to the length of the trailer while towing. GCW Alert gives a warning when the trailer and vehicle weigh more than the vehicle’s Gross Combination Weight Rating.
Towing is the HD series trade and stock models model, and the 2024 model comes with a few tricks to play with. To begin, the maximum towing package is now available on every Silverado 2500 trim, bringing the max tow capacity of the 2500HD series to 22,500 pounds when using a 6.6L Turbo-diesel engine.
2024 Silverado HD Trims and Cabs
In 2024, the 2500HD and the 3500HD are offered in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations, with the option of two front wheels for the 3500. The trim hierarchy is based on Custom, Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and tops off with the lavish High Country trim.
Chevrolet states that ZR2 trims will be added to the HD lineup later in the calendar for the very first time. There is no information on the specifics yet, we anticipate several suspension wheels, tires, and tuning improvements to improve off-road performance. This is similar to that of the Silverado ZR2 1500 ZR2.
