It’s not every car that can transform from the coupe and convertible smoothly. It’s different from 2024’s Aston Martin DB12 Volante, the drop-top version of the English brand’s newest “super tourer.” Aston Martin will show the car next week at its Monterey Car Week festivities, and those who experience it will be going to be treated.
Although it’s true that the DB12 Volante shares some bodywork with its predecessor, so it appears similar on the exterior, it’s a superior car in many ways. The focus was on making it stronger in general and paying special focus to make huge improvements in the rigidity of key places like the mounting points for suspensions. These modifications enabled Aston Martin engineers to mount the steering column with more rigidity and, as such, increase off-center responsiveness and comfort.

The cabin has also been significantly improved over the DB11’s and the main feature is an Aston Martin-designed infotainment system, which is an enormous improvement over the previous Mercedes system in 2011. The interior also features a brand-new central console that boasts tactile buttons, switches, and knobs instead of today’s standard haptic touchpads and LCDs. This DB12 Volante may not be an all-new vehicle however, inside it certainly feels like one.
Similar to the coupe, the power is derived from AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 which benefits from a specific Aston Martin hardware and software. It produces 671 horsepower and 590 pounds of torque, compared to the 528 and 513 pounds of torque produced by the DB11 Volante. Aston Martin says it’ll run from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, with a maximum speed of 202 mph. Do you really need a blow-dryer if you can get the DB12 Volante?
transmission is a ZF eight-speed automatic that is mounted in the rear. It has a lower last drive ratio than DB11’s gearbox. It distributes the power to the wheels via an electronically controlled limit-slip differential. For suspension, the primary distinction in the two models DB12 coupe as well as Volante is the spring rates at the rear, likely higher to accommodate the weight added by the top mechanism, and the adaptive damper adjustment. Like the coupe, the 21-inch forged wheels come standard, as are specifically designed for Aston Martin. Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tires.
The roof of the Volante features an eight-layer cloth top that completely hides underneath the rear deck after it has been it is lowered. Topless is a great fit for the DB12 best, particularly for those who don’t seem to be in love with the black trim which extends to the rear of the greenhouse. The Volante eliminates it and the roof-down style is striking because of its simplicity. Four different convertible top fabric colors are available including blue, black, red, and silver/black. Aston claims that the roof can take fourteen seconds to open and 16 minutes to shut, which is possible at speeds of up to 31 mph.
The Volante will come equipped with an eight-speed auto and rear-wheel drive, as well as the response honed through an electronically controlled locking differential in the rear. Adjustable dampers are standard, and claim to offer an increase of 500 percent of “bandwidth of force distribution” in comparison to those used in the DB11 Volante. The new Volante is said to be more comfortable than the coupe and will have different rear springs, and what Aston calls a “dedicated damper tune”; it’s also said to have 5 percent more rigidity in the torsional plane over its predecessor, the DB11 Volante.
The most notable change in this model is the DB12 Volante is identical to that of the coupe, which is the appearance of a new and improved cabin with enhanced ergonomics, but also the introduction of a touchscreen rather than the cumbersome control unit that was used in the DB11. The structural and mechanical changes of DB11 in comparison to DB12 are essentially a massive facelift, this is the one aspect where the new Volante is expected to appear to be a completely new car.
